Marcel Marceau – The Mime That Saved Kids During The Holocaust

The French actor and mime artist, Marcel Marceau. He was one of the most famous mimes but before becoming celebrated for his artistry/performance, he also took part in the French Resistance during the Nazi occupation of France. During this period he famously helped countless orphaned Jewish children to safety (during the second world war; whilst endangering his own life) as well as constantly doing little performances for them in order to cheer them up during such horrific circumstances. He himself had to change his name (from Mangel; as he was of Jewish descent) in order to not be captured and imprisoned. His father Charles Mangel, was murdered at Auschwitz. There is a movie based on this titled ‘Resistance’ (from 2020).

“Destiny permitted me to live. This is why I have to bring hope to people who struggle in the world.” – Marcel Marceau
